About · Board

A board that formed itself around the mission.

The Fish for Change board came together organically, out of the people who supported the idea when it was still an idea on a flats boat. Experience and enthusiasm in equal measure.

Board of Directors

Mentoring and development, so the mission outlasts any one summer.

  • Beckie Brown kneeling in a river with a cutthroat trout Beckie BrownChair

Beckie's education was in adventure tourism business management and adventure guiding. She owned her own fly fishing guide outfit in Fernie, British Columbia, for more than seventeen years, running women's retreats, youth fly fishing schools and learn-to-fly-fish programs. Fly fishing is her passion, her hobby and her work. She is also a Fish for Change founder and its Colorado program director.

  • Rebecca Brown, smiling Rebecca BrownVice Chair

From a fly fishing family, Rebecca spent her childhood in the Colorado backcountry. She is reservations manager, logistics coordinator and bookkeeper for several fly fishing companies in several countries, and brings long experience with nonprofits. A Fish for Change founder and its Chief Financial Officer.

  • Jim Brownlie holding a steelhead Jim BrownlieSecretary

Texas born and Colorado raised, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin in undergrad and law, and in the upstream oil and natural gas business when he isn't in the water somewhere looking for fish. "JB" has fished since he could hold a rod, and his personal commitment is to leave every place he fishes better than he found it, and to plan ahead to make a real difference wherever he travels.

His hope: a whole generation of fly fishers, from every background, thinking about conservation and how they can help the places they visit before they ever set foot on a trail or board a plane.

  • Jeff Runnfeldt wading a flat, holding a permit Jeff RunnfeldtDirector

Jeff wears his heart on his sleeve. An avid angler and conservationist, he has supported Fish for Change since it was an idea on a flats boat. He supports the local schools on Guanaja and has made it possible for many island children to get an education they otherwise might not have.

His ability to reach into a community and help where it's needed is inspiring, and the relationships he builds and keeps teach lessons Fish for Change listens to. He listens first, then gives you the best advice from a long career as a respected finance and investment manager. We couldn't be more honored to have "JR" helping achieve the mission.

  • Hagen Patterson wading a flat, holding a permit Hagen PattersonThought Leader · Founding Student

Hagen's connection to Fish for Change runs deep. He was a founding member of the original student program that would later become Fish for Change, joining in 2012 as a student and then a trip leader in its earliest days, before it became a nonprofit. Now, on the Board of Directors, he is honored to help guide the organization that played such a formative role in his own life.

Hagen is Chief Operating Officer at an emergency management and crisis response firm, leading operations in humanitarian crises, combat zones and natural disaster response. He holds a BA in Sustainable Development and Creative Writing from Columbia University and is working toward publishing his first book. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Olivia, whom he met through Fish for Change, and their two dogs, Hutch (a North Texas ranch stray) and Chavo (a Mag Bay street dog).

  • Knox Kronenberg wading, holding a snook Knox KronenbergThought Leader · Founding Student

Knox is an internationally collected fine art photographer based in Austin, Texas. His work spans iconic Western imagery to striking African wildlife, and his camera has carried him across continents in pursuit of stories that honor wilderness, tradition and the human spirit.

Knox's relationship with Fish for Change began as a student at age 13 and grew through many years of leading trips. Today he serves on the board with gratitude for an organization that helped shape his life, and a commitment to creating those same opportunities for others.

Honorary Board

Two people who shaped the sport, and lent their names to a program for the kids coming into it.

  • Joan Wulff tying a fly on a riverbank Joan WulffIGFA Hall of Fame · "The First Lady of Fly Fishing"

Joan first picked up a fly rod in 1937 and was a leading figure in the sport ever since: a champion caster, a teacher, and the example a generation of anglers, and especially girls, looked up to. She paved the way for aspiring anglers and set the standard as an instructor and leader.

Joan, our dear friend: thank you for being part of this movement. We are so lucky to have had your example to look up to and your wisdom to lean on.

  • Stu Apte on a boat holding a permit Stu ApteIGFA Hall of Fame

From sea to sky: Stu was a Pan Am pilot and a world-renowned fishing guide and leader in the sport. He helped pioneer saltwater fly fishing, setting out after huge sailfish and tarpon on light tippet when nobody thought it could be done.

We are honored to have had Hall of Famer Stu Apte on the Fish for Change Honorary Board, and grateful for his mentorship.
