Become a trip leader

A volunteer position for Fish for Change alumni.

The job

Fish for Change runs on its alumni. Students who grew up joining us in the summer have naturally moved into leadership in the organization. Trip leaders have a superpower we don't take lightly: they create an inclusive, educational space and set the tone for the week.

There are two parts to the job: the work leading into the programs, and running the programs themselves.

Through the year

  • Help build the course work.
  • Correspond with students to get them ready for their trips.
  • Work with the Director on initiatives, and connect your network with F4C.
  • Actively develop the skills of a strong educator.

On the program

  • Meet students at the airport and fly with them to the location.
  • Keep an open line to parents.
  • Prepare students and coach them on the fishery.
  • Run the daily curriculum and lead the evening discussions.
  • Be the link between the community and the students.
  • Collect photos and writing, and keep social up to date through the week.
  • Mentor and friend to the student body.

From a first-year trip leader's reflection, Alumni and College Week, Guanaja

"I learned to lead in a way that was less structured, less controlling and clear cut than I had ever done before. Cutting up with the kids, coming to them as a friend and hopefully someone they can confide in, but being able to have enough voice to control a day's direction or activity as well. It was a tough balance, but I found it navigable with humility, patience, and laughter."
